It is a different pace on cross country skis: one that allows you to embrace the quiet of a snow-covered setting. Gliding on a frozen lake with snowy peaks and wide skies as your backdrop makes it even more magical.
Most people know Invermere for its lakes in summer swimming, paddling, boating, and soaking up the sun. Winter transforms these same lakes into a unique playground. Come out in winter for a unique experience of cross country skiing on the frozen lakes!
Lake Windermere Whiteway

The Lake Windermere Whiteway is a multiuse trail groomed for Nordic skiing and ice skating with fat bikers and walkers enjoying it, too.
When weather permits, a 12- to 21-kilometre route is groomed, looping the northern half of the lake. A track is set for classic skiers and corduroy for skate skiers.
It is ideal terrain for everyone: beginners learning on a flat surface, intermediate skiers to practice their technique without hills to change cadence, and experienced skiers to push the pace! Sunny days are gorgeous with sparkling snow, and cloudy days bring a moody mountain backdrop.
Access points are at Kinsmen Beach in Invermere and Windermere Beach in Windermere with benches, a kiosk and map, and firepits.
Lillian Lake Whiteway

A 10 minute drive from Invermere leads you to Lillian Lake, a tucked away oasis. A 3-kilometre loop is groomed for both classic and skate cross country skiing, and a skating path is also ploughed. It’s a perfect spot for families to try something new or play around on the snow for a day!
With only a few cabins scattered around the shoreline, there is no light pollution making for an amazing night skiing experience under a blanket of stars.
Rentals

World record
In 2014, the Lake Windermere Whiteway was recognized by Guiness World Records as the World’s Longest Skating track. It was honoured that title with 31km of groomed track, with four loops spanning the lake: James Chabot Loop, Windermere Loop, Indian Beach Loop, and Rushmere Loop.
